Well Done Mark Pengelly

Man described as ‘Corby’s fourth emergency service’ honoured for 25 years of community work

A plaque to commend the work of Cllr Mark Pengelly has been unveiled at Stephenson Way Community Centre

A ceremony was held on Saturday at Stevie Way Community Centre

People living on Corby’s East Lloyds estate have unveiled a plaque as a thank you to Councillor Mark Pengelly who has dedicated a quarter of a century to making his community a better place to live.

Cllr Pengelly, who was a borough councillor before Corby Borough Council was scrapped earlier this month, was described as ‘Corby’s fourth emergecy service’ as the plaque at Stephenson Way Community Centre was dedicated to him on Saturday (May 22).

Although he is paid only a limited allowance for being an elected member, Cllr Pengelly has been on call at all hours including Christmas and Easter for the people in his ward since he was first elected to the borough’s East ward in 1995.

The plaque paid for by local people

Me and Mark were involved in the regeneration of the council houses on the estate. None of them had had a new kitchen or bathroom for years and years. Every council house got a new kitchen and bathroom.

“Mark has managed to get £70,000 spent on the park.”

“Mark isn’t just a councillor to a lot of people, he’s the fourth emergency service. There’s the fire brigade, the police, the ambulance and then there’s Mark Pengelly.”

Mayor Lawrence Ferguson said: “I’ve known Mark about 12 years. He mentored me when I was first a borough councillor and he still does now. It’s amazing to think he was on the council when my grandad (John Wood-Cowling) on the council.

“It’s difficult to become a well-known councillor these days as the likes of Jimmy Kane were, but Mark’s known by everyone in the whole town.”

Major shoe retailer Deichmann has agreed a lease for a purpose-built 162,500 sq ft warehouse and offices in Corby.

The firm, Europe’s biggest footwear retailer, will take on the unit at Centrix Business Park off Phoenix Parkway after agreeing the deal with site owners and developers Clowes Developments.

The Corby warehouse – on a site bigger than London’s Trafalgar Square – will be the firm’s brand new UK distribution facility with their head office remaining in nearby Market Harborough.

Chris Holden, director at Deichmann, said: “We are continuing to expand our presence in the UK both online and opening new High Street stores.

“This development will enhance that expansion and enable us to improve service levels across the business.

“We believe Corby is a great location for our UK warehouse, being close to the centre of our store network and providing a skilled workforce for logistics operations.”

Deichmann was founded in Germany in 1913 by Heinrich Deichmann and now employs more than 40,000 people around the world.

Centrix Business Park forms part of Corby’s new ‘regeneration framework’ and comprises a 39-acre (15.8 hectare) development.

James Richards, development director at Clowes Developments, said: “Securing another major occupier for the scheme in Corby is a great result.

“The scope of the building and its high-spec delivery will, without doubt, add considerable value to the ongoing regeneration aspirations for this town.

“Bringing a household names such as Deichmann and BakeAway to Centrix Park are lines in the sand marking the bright new future for the former brownfield site.”

A huge warehouse vacated by office retailer Staples has been snapped-up by Wincanton to be used as a distribution hub for a rapidly-expanding furniture company.

Staples announced it was moving off the site in Mitchell Road earlier this year, leaving dozens of people jobless.

But now Wincanton, which already runs several logistics centres around Northamptonshire, is taking over the lease on the building

The firm has been awarded a new contract to provide eFulfilment, stock management and final-mile home delivery services with online furniture retailer Snug.

The three-and-a-half-year contract will see Wincanton fulfil all customer orders, with large products being delivered via Wincanton’s two-person home delivery network.

Wincanton already has contracts with similar firms including Dobbies, Dwell, The White Company and Sofa Club.

Snug will become one of the principal customers at the state-of-the-art automated warehouse in Mitchell Road.

Wincanton has pledged to invest in the facility to develop next-generation robotics.

Snug launched in 2019 offering the UK’s first-ever sofa in a box, provides high-quality sofas on-demand for simple, no-tools assembly directly in customers’ homes.

Wincaton’s Managing Director of Digital and eFulfilment Paul Durkin said: “Snug required a long-term logistics partner to manage its warehousing fulfilment operations, as well as provide a critical role on the front-line meeting customer’s delivery expectations.

“Wincanton’s well-established eCommerce and eFulfilment capabilities, enhanced by our new development means we are well placed to support Snug with their continued growth.”
